Alternative to the tired old wizard-with-a-sugar-daddy interpretation of the patron/warlock relationship in Dungeons & Dragons:

  • Clueless boss and long-suffering employee, whose powers are basically the magical equivalent of pilfering office supplies for personal use
  • Scheming master and duplicitous apprentice who are totally open about their loathing for each other and are keen to see who betrays whom first
  • Bureaucratic devil and soul-peddling diabolist with a contract a mile long, each honestly believing they’re getting the better of the other
  • Glowering quartermaster and loose-cannon operative, whose record for getting results just barely justifies the expense of employing them
  • Indifferent parent who pays their estranged offspring’s allowance like clockwork but otherwise prefers to deal with them as little as possible
  • Vast, slumbering god-monster and amoral parabiologist who knows which spots to poke with a stick to provoke particular autonomic responses

Faerie Queen and an ambitious would-be fairy princess being groomed to be married off to a devil in an attempt to arrange it so the Queen’s demense can be exempted from the Fae tithe with Hell.

Hapless shepherd who found a weird statue in the forest and has now ended up with the goblin king’s bastard adopted as a sort of little brother, trying to bring him up right.

hm. i could say like something from critical role or taz but that’s kind of boring, so i’m gonna go with the elf rogue from a campaign i was in who was the chaotic good to my neutral evil. the player also allowed to to adapt his character for my own writing so that was nice too

A concept: An adventuring party made entirely of people of one race disguised as people of another. The disguises are really bad, like the “dwarf” is just a halfling with a fake beard, the “orc” is an elf with body paint and novelty teeth, and the dragonborn is just three goblins in a trenchcoat- but none of them have any experience with any of the races in question and are trying not to draw attention to their own disguises, so all of them are fully prepared to accept any oddity on the part of their party members.

The halfling, having just been caught taking off their beard in private so they can breathe: ….this is normal for dwarves
The goblins, who were looking for somewhere private that they can crawl out of the trenchcoat: Acceptable, have a nice day

Halfling: Friend orc, I don’t mean to alarm you, but the green appears to be coming off of your skin. Onto my hand.
Elf: I. Have a skin condition.
Halfling, discreetly adjusting their beard: Acceptable, have a nice day
