Panel Borders

Speaking on Alex Fitch’s Panel Borders, Gerard Way discusses The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys and the possibility of writing another series. Listen to the full podcast here. Broadcast on 1/3/2018, recorded September 2017.

Transcript:

Alex Fitch: Because, I guess the one time where
the music has literally segwayed into the comic is when you did the
Killjoys comic, which continues the plot of the album. Was that
something you intended right from the start, that it was intended as an
album and a comic?

Gerard Way: You know, Killjoys was a
very different comic when it started. Shaun Simon and I, we worked–it
was funny–he told me about a comic he was working on called Killjoys. And then one day I called him back and I was like “I keep thinking about that True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys comic.” And he’s like, “The title’s just Killjoys.”
I was like “Are you sure? Like, you didn’t tell me the rest?” And then
we started working on it together, and it was this whole different
thing. And maybe one day we’d actually put that version of it out, to
see how far removed it is from where it ended up. But it started–the
themes of that comic and that world that Shaun and I were working on,
they started to seep into my life and the music. So then, it was almost
like the band imitated the comic in some ways. Or at least, my look and
the car and things like that. So it was very interesting how that
happened.

Alex Fitch: Because when you look at, say, the
video for “Na Na Na Na Na”–I don’t know how many “Na’s” that was, I
hope it’s the right number–

Gerard Way: There’s a lot, there’s a lot.

Alex Fitch: That has a real clear aesthetic to it, sort of Mad Max meets Barbarella. And then you want the videos to match the comic and vice versa, or at least have a commonality.

Gerard
Way: Yeah, yeah. You know, actually, now just even here sitting and
thinking about it, it might be fun to go back and do that original comic
where it’s so different. It’s like different characters and everything.
That would be fun. But I’ve also heard some people want us to continue
the story of the Killjoys after that point or the prequel point to
the…I think a lot of people want to see the stuff before we got killed
in the videos. So there’s that, too.
