Oh dont forget about transfusions.smackjeeves.com. It’s about a vampire and a human male couple. It’s really cute (though it does get nsfw at a couple points, but you can easily skip it)
Almost all of the comics I’ve been writing up in my comic recs tag have LGBTQ+ characters, but I’m gonna add this post to that tag; I haven’t heard of most of these, and I hope I can find something in here that I can enjoy!
I wanna add Sakana to this list, the main storyline focuses on a relationship between a boy and a girl but there are several gay characters/relationships that are prominent enough I think it deserves a mention.
@omgcheckplease College-age gay protagonist that plays hockey. Fantastic cast of characters, slow-burn, just really good stuff
Ignition Zero by @noelarthurian, v diverse queer/trans urban fantasy (real-world Maryland + faeries/magic) rly elegant traditional-art style
Strange Strangers by @menderash, “a comic about fringe science, internet friendship, and pursuing The Truth,” 90′s Creepy Aesthetic and rly cute
@dissent-comic the story of a prince and a male witch who cross paths and seem to be slowly falling a little in love with each other. (And the best friend of the prince is canon trans)
(On mobile can’t link)Sister Claire by @yamino is a super cool comic with tons of queer characters! Not only is it a regular web comic, but it also has these things called “missing moments” that fill in different parts of the story with little mini stories.
@princeandswancomic another great one to add 💖

Always Raining Here – just thinking about thes boys makes me want to cry. its one of those stories that pulls you in and gets you invested so when the angst finally comes… it really gets you. any and all arh content i will inhale with great pleasure.

Starfighter – NSFW. gay space dudes. some spying. i am absolutely in LOVE with @hamletmachine ’s art. theres also a spinoff game; good game. good comic.

a short description of my completely illogical danger days musical:
- look alive sunshine and na na na are THE dance number. like. these songs are huge. it’s just the ensemble dancing around as killjoys while the fab four fuck around with each other. there’s absolutely a live band onstage with them with the instruments blended onto the set.
- bulletproof heart is just firefights. not too much on this one (if you have an idea please tell me, i’d love to see your ideas on this completely hypothetical thing)
- SING is where korse and the dracs are first seen, it maybe follows the video’s plot except. not at all. also where the girl shows up
- planetary is another fun dance number except not as big as na na na. they’re running from korse except they’re also having fun and horsing around. there’s a big feeling that Bad Things Are Going To Happen
- the only hope. like i said before, this is the song where jet and kobra die. they’re gone to get supplies and korse storms them. act one ends with them dead.
- second act: party, ghoul and the girl are all waiting for jet and kobra to come back. anxious, party turns on the radio. cue Traffic Report Bomb.
- party turns bitter with grief. they leave their hideout after Traffic Report, but Party Poison is just party lashing out at ghoul and the girl for trying to have fun like old times while jet and kobra are dead.
- save yourself is when shit gets serious. korse is dangerously close to discovering them; the song is just one big fight scene/dance scene. party tries to go all Martyr and shuts ghoul and the girl in a closet while he attempts to fend off the dracs all by himself. he gets injured, ghoul kills the remaining dracs and the girl gets a hold of one of the rayguns. she shoots the last drac, which is an Oh Shit moment; she’s extremely young, too young to be killing, and yet they’ve driven her to this point.
- S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W is them running again, but dodging every single little obstacle is a chore with party’s wounds. the girl is still trying to hold onto her innocence after killing someone, and it (killing) should be so casual in the zones, but it’s different with her. the bomb in the song, in this case, is korse.
- summertime is when they reach dr. d’s hideout – show pony, dj hot chimp, newsagogo, cherri cola and dr. d are all there. this is the last bittersweet/happy song, with party and ghoul reminiscing about jet and kobra while surrounded by friends.
- destroya is intense. korse finally catches up to them; it’s a fight scene again, but with more dancing. dr. d and co. manage to escape with the girl, but leave party and ghoul. party is injured again, badly, while ghoul is in the same position. (idk how to fit in the mythos of destroya and the phoenix witch??? maybe in spoken dialogue instead of the songs…)
- the kids from yesterday is just party and ghoul talking to each other, remembering the “good ol’ days” while they’re slowly dying. they die at the end, and the phoenix witch shows up to take their masks (again, i need to fit in the mythos w/ her…).
- goodnite dr. death is the girl, leaving from dr. d’s hideout. he signs off the end of the musical – he introduced it, and now gets to send it off. it sort of alludes to the timeline of the comics.
- vampire money is the bows! just as energetic as na na na or planetary. such a fun ending to contrast the sadness.
this concludes my rambling about a thing that will never happen
i just want a period piece centered around black people that isn’t about being slaves/servants
where’s our steamy 60s drama?
where’s our 30s Harlem Renaissance coming of age flick?
where’s our Victorian steampunk sci-fi adventure?
where is it? where? tell me where?????
in film or books, cus in books there’s
sula by toni morisson is a steamy psychological coming of age drama i’m pretty sure taking place in the 60′s or 50′s, about two black girls in a predominately black town in Ohio, whose lives go in different but parallel directions after sharing a childhood trauma.
mumbo jumbo is harlem renaissance era post-modern comedy about hougan detective searching for a mysterious suppressed african text, and battling the forces of white supremacy in a conspiracy to undermine black culture going back thousands of years.
yellow-back radio broke down is a western written like a radio-show about a black cowboy named the lupe garoo kid, and a clear influence on blazing saddles that would come years later.
perdido street station’s main character is a overweight black scientist, living in a Dickensian city of magical steam punk sci fi adventure and multiple sentient races, who is involved in a secret and illegal inter-species relationship with a beetle-headed artist, and on the verge of a breakthrough in unifying magic and science.
and pym (retro sci-fi/parody/adventure) and zone one (zombie survival horror) are great genre stories, but both are in modern era. this is also excluding afro-futurist stuff.
in film there’s
yeelen – set in ancient africa, about a young man with magic powers on a quest to find his evil sorcerer father. the first real fantasy film in african cinema. black writer, director, and cast.
daughters of the dust– set in a isolated black community living off the american coast over three generations. the first feature film directed by a black women. black writer, director, and cast.
harlem nights– harlem renaissance era crime comedy starring three generations of comedy genius. black writer, director, and cast.
hoodlum– underrated gangster film about black gangsters in harlem. black director and cast
ganja and hess– black vampire art film set in the 70s. black writer, director, and cast.
chameleon street- based on a true story about black con man in the 80s who was able to successfully impersonate lawyers, doctors, and professors, spielberg’s “catch me if you can” is essentially white washed version of the same idea. black writer, director, and cast.
the killer of sheep– neo-realist coming of age film about black lives in 70′s Watts, made originally as a student film thesis. black writer, director, and cast.
belle is period peace from a black film-maker, but predominately white cast, while beasts of the southern wild, attack the block, the people under the stairs, def by temptation, vampire in brooklyn, and after earth are sci-fi/fantasy/horror films with predominately black casts but not period pieces. Medicine for Melancholy, An Oversimplification Of Her Beauty, and Top Five are conversation driven romantic comedies with black, casts, writers, and directors. 90′s era set coming of age in the wood, the brothers, love and basketball, and upcoming dope.
i think nearly all other black films fall under Spike Lee, Tyler Perry, 70′s exploitation films, dance movies, 90′s hood films, civil rights & slavery films, musician biopics, African cinema, and pre-Hollywood Race Films, but I might have missed some that don’t fall into these.
Sorry to over-respond. Happy hunting.
